Everything started 60 years ago with an elementary school teacher named Barbara Williams, who was looking for better ways to teach her students to read. She found that when children experienced the stories, they enjoyed the process and became better readers. So, she turned familiar fairy tales into interactive plays where children can act out their part. She added characters that guide beginning readers through the story so they do not get lost. She deliberately used repeated keywords and phrases to build a foundational vocabulary. She also used these stories to talk about important concepts like not talking to strangers, listening to guardians and parents, taking care of the environment, asking for help, and saying thank you.

Barbara Williams was my aunt. I was one of the thousands of kids she helped teach to read. Though we lived thousands of miles away, my sisters and I loved the packages she would send with her new books and puppets to go with them. We spent hours reading those stories! We loved them. Later, when we were older, my parents started a business with her to share her work with others in a digital format. She did not live to see her work published. I wish she could see now what she began: students worldwide learning English and many other languages. In her honor, we still use her hand-drawn characters in the stories she created from hard work, dedication, and love. I miss her.
